[edit] Dates

The RA contract provides for employment from slightly before the opening of dormitories to slightly later than the closing of dormitories. There is a break in employment for the winter break. RAs are kept on the payroll during senior week if necessary for the continued operation of the dormitory. There is no obligation for renewal.

[edit] Compensation

RAs are financially compensated in three ways: free housing, a stipend, and a meal plan discount if applicable. Free housing is the largest portion of this compensation, as a single room in 2007-2008 is priced at $7,560. This compensation has been increased substantially over the past several years due to the increases in on-campus housing prices ($7,230 in 2006-2007 and $6,880 in 2005-2006). Although not indicated directly, the compensation also covers house fees where the RA lives.

RAs receive a stipend paid through the endowed college branch of Cornell. The compensation is $600 for a first year RA, $850 for a second year RA, and $950 for a third year RA. These funds are dispersed on a bimonthly basis with no hourly rates involved.

A 20% end of semester meal plan discount is reimbursed to RAs on their bursar bill as a final form of compensation. Currently, this stipend may only be applied to an RA with a meal plan and is not applicable to co-op administrative fees. In the future, the discount may be incorporated with the stipend.

Board during pre-term training periods in the fall and spring is provided along with board during on-call periods during vacations.

[edit] Provisions

Specific provisions mentioned in the contract are primarily clarifications of the RA Position Description and Residential Programs Student Staff manual, both of which are indicated to be part of the contract. Important provisions include:

  • the maintenance of a GPA (2.5 for seniors, 2.4 for juniors, 2.3 for sophomores)
  • attendance at a 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM weekly staff meeting
  • participation in one-on-one meetings and a performance review
  • notification and approval from a supervisor before accepting any other concurrent jobs

[edit] Termination

Termination of appointment occurs automatically if a student drops below full-time status. A termination process occurs after standard disciplinary procedures detailed in the student staff manual.
