Hi Jmholloway! Thanks for your edits and welcome to CUWiki. Please be sure your articles are composed of more than just text from external pages - we'll get in trouble with the page owners as they have rights to the content. Quoting external pages is fine, but they unfortunately can't make up the bulk of the article without violating fair use. -Opakapaka 19:46, 4 December 2007 (EST)

Question: I was under the impression that this wiki was owned by Cornell. If it is, and so is the content of the pages I put up, why is it copyright violation to post cornell content on other cornell content sites? - jmholloway
so I just read the front page that this is not cornell owned (teacher gave me the impression above), but my question still remains, if this were cornell owned could I legally post cornell content on here? Also, if I get permission from the cornell departments to post their info on here is that legal?
Right, this site is unofficial. If the site were Cornell owned and operated we'd be dealing with a different set of parameters - the license under which things were being released, the intentions behind the site, etc. which may or may not allow legal posting of Cornell content.
In its current state, the intentions behind the site are to describe various aspects of Cornell in vaguely original ways and the material is released under the GNU Free Documentation License 1.2 which basically says "this document is ok to distribute freely without restriction provided the license stays intact". The best (and worst) loophole might be best described by the content of this page - it is mostly composed of external site data, but the big block of external data is in a quote block. The article opens with original content. You might consider setting up your articles in such a manner. As to getting permission for posting content of other sites verbatim, in theory yes that's legal, but not the spirit of CUWiki. Surely there is more to say about a particular group than just what they've got on their website. Happy editing and let me know any further questions. - Opakapaka 19:04, 5 December 2007 (EST)
