Open to all students, across all academic disciplines, in all seven undergraduate colleges, Rawlings CPRS enables its students to collaborate with faculty mentors of their choosing in designing and planning an individualized program of research -- a degree of collaboration usually unheard of in the undergraduate experience. Magnifying the power of this dynamic student-faculty partnership, Rawlings CPRS provides each scholar with a generous $8,000 research support account (RSA) and an annual need-based loan replacement of up to $4,000.
An anonymous gift to the university created the Cornell Presidential Research Scholars program in 1996. In 2006, The Cornell Board of Trustees renamed the program in honor of President Hunter R. Rawlings III, in recognition of his commitment to students and scholars.
[edit] Mission
The Hunter R. Rawlings III Cornell Presidential Research Scholars program selects highly motivated students and provides them with the opportunity to conduct financially supported, faculty mentored research throughout their undergraduate years. Students are encouraged to pursue their intellectual interests through research in any area of study from the Humanities, to the Physical and Biological Sciences, Social Science to Engineering. Selected RCPRS students have demonstrated academic excellence in addition to personal characteristics necessary to becoming a great researcher. Participating in a world-class research community early in a student's career promotes academic growth and opens doors to the future.
[edit] About
The Hunter R. Rawlings III Cornell Presidential Research Scholars program provides up to 200 scholars each year with as much as $24,000 in financial support over four years.
Research Scholars connect with faculty mentors in their area of interest during their freshman year. Together, the student and mentor develop a plan that leads to faculty-directed research during each academic year and includes at least one summer of individualized research at Cornell or elsewhere. See descriptions of student projects.
Students in Rawlings CPRS have access to a Research Support Account (RSA) of up to $8,000 over four years to cover expenses incurred during their research, such as wages during the academic year, summer research and living expenses, research-related travel, and supplies. In addition, students on financial aid will receive up to $4,000 per year - or $16,000 over four years - to reduce their debt from student loans.
Students pursue research in the biological and physical sciences, as well as social sciences and humanities. They are enrolled in all seven of Cornell's undergraduate colleges. In addition, scholars can conduct research outside of their own college or major using any of the university's resources.
