The Cornell Tradition is a fellowship program as a part of the Cornell Commitment. Its mission supports students who exhibit a strong work ethic, interest in public service, and academic excellence through community service and work opportunities and financial assistance. Their motto is “Work. Service. Scholarship.”

[edit] Application Process and Requirements

Incoming freshman and transfer students are automatically considered for the fellowship when they are admitted into the university, nominated by their respective college admissions office, and then selected by a campus-wide committee. Admittance into the program is based on the student’s prior academic, community service, and work experience and extracurricular activities.

Current students may apply through the Cornell Traditional Office, located in 103 Day Hall and all application materials must be turned in by mid-May. At the end of each year current fellows must resubmit an application and have completed the following requirements to be considered for fellowship again.

  • Applicant must be a citizen or permanent resident of the United States, Mexico, or Canada
  • Applicant must have a current financial aid application on file
  • 250 (200 for freshmen) hours of work
  • 75 hours of community service (at least 15 of these must be off-campus service)
  • Applicant must have a grade point average (GPA) of at least 2.3 in a full-time degree program

[edit] Types of Financial Aid available

  • Students demonstrating financial need may receive an award of up to $4000 per year in need-based loan reduction
  • Students who do not qualify for need-based aid are awarded a $600 book award every year
  • Wage subsidies for on-campus employment for students who do not qualify for or have run out of Federal Work Study (FWS)
  • Tradition will cover up to $3000 in living expenses for summer internships
  • If a student worked in non-profit and/or career-related positions without compensation during the summertime, Tradition may provide a replacement for the student’s summer expected savings
