Collegetown
From CUWiki
Collegetown is a loosely defined district of the City of Ithaca that is directly to the south of the main Cornell University campus. It is a part of Ithaca, New York with zipcode 14850. Collegetown plays host to numerous small restaurants, apartment buildings, and student housing. There are three neighborhoods in Collegetown, loosely defined as Collegetown, Upper Collegetown, and Lower Collegetown
Collegetown proper comprises the largest area and offers the densest urban environment. It is complete with many multi-story apartment buildings and businesses. These include a multitude of bars, restaurants, and service businesses catering to students. It is roughly defined by Cascadilla Gorge to the north, State Street (NYS Route 79) to the south, Linden Avenue to the east, and Stewart Ave. to the west.
Upper Collegetown generally comprises the area bordered by Linden Avenue to the West and the Belle-Sherman and East Hill Plaza neighborhoods of Ithaca to the south, east, and north.
Lower Collegetown is bordered by Stewart Avenue to the east, Cascadilla Gorge to the north, Six Mile Creek to the south, and Downtown Ithaca to the west. Stewart Avenue provides several bars and restaurants, as does the area of Lower Collegetown bordering Ithaca Commons. Lower Collegetown is the least undergraduate-centered area of the district and many graduate students and families live in the neighborhood.
The neighborhoods derive their names based on their relative position on the slope of Ithaca's East Hill. "Up" generally refers to places farther up the hill towards East Hill Plaza, while "down" directs pedestrians towards Downtown Ithaca and the Ithaca Commons.
