Cornell University’s founding commitment to remain “an institution where any person can find instruction in any study” not only ensures access to diverse students, but also produces alumni who excel in all fields. As of 2007, living alumni number 249,976. Notables include Thomas Pynchon ’59; Ruth Bader Ginsburg ’54; Austin Kiplinger ’39; Toni Morrison ’55; Christopher Reeve ’74; Susan Rothenberg, BFA ’67; E.B. White ’21; Pearl Buck, MA ’25; Junot Diaz, MFA ’95; Sheryl WuDunn ’81; Kurt Vonnegut ’44, and Mae Jemison, MD ’81. Data from FY 2005–06 ranks Cornell fourth in gifts and bequests from alumni and fifth in total support from all sources among U.S. colleges and universities reporting voluntary gift support. In October 2006, Cornell publicly launched an ambitious capital campaign, Far Above…The Campaign for Cornell, to raise $4 billion to increase scholarship endowment and improve the undergraduate experience, attract and retain faculty, and expand the physical plant. www.alumni.cornell.edu is the official website for alumni, parents, and friends of Cornell University, offering services, connections to organizations, and ways to get involved and support the university’s mission.
